Tire terminology glossary
Plain-English definitions for terms that come up in Tire Library support conversations.
Construction
- Radial (R) — Modern tire construction where the ply cords run perpendicular to the direction of travel. Most passenger / light truck tires are radial.
- Bias (B) — Older construction where ply cords run diagonally. Used on some trailer / specialty tires.
- Ply — A layer of fabric / steel cords inside the tire. More plies generally = stronger (but heavier).
- Belt — Steel / fabric layers under the tread that stabilize it.
- Cap ply / jointless band — Nylon overlay that helps high-speed stability.
Sizing
- Section width — Width of the tire at its widest point, measured in millimeters (or inches for imperial).
- Aspect ratio — Sidewall height expressed as a percentage of section width.
65means sidewall height is 65% of width. - Rim / wheel diameter — Diameter of the wheel the tire mounts on, in inches.
- Overall diameter — Outer diameter of the inflated tire.
- Rolling circumference — Distance traveled in one full rotation. Used to calibrate odometers / speedometers.
Performance
- Load index — Numeric code (e.g.
97) that maps to a maximum load per tire. Higher = more load capacity. - Speed rating — Letter code that maps to a maximum sustainable speed. Higher letter = faster capability.
- Load range — Letter-based strength code (
SL,XL,E,F, ...). Newer equivalent of ply rating. - Ply rating — Number of plies. Older strength indicator, now superseded by Load Range for many uses.
Tread and wear
- Tread depth — Depth of the tread grooves on a new tire, in 32nds of an inch.
- Treadwear grade — UTQG grade predicting relative tread life (e.g.
500). - Traction grade — UTQG grade for wet-stopping ability (
AA > A > B > C). - Temperature grade — UTQG grade for heat resistance at speed (
A > B > C). - UTQG — Uniform Tire Quality Grading, the US-mandated three-number/letter code.
Severe-service certifications
- 3PMSF (Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake) — Severe-snow service certified.
- M+S (Mud and Snow) — Meets basic mud/snow performance standards (lower bar than 3PMSF).
- Studdable — Tire can have metal studs installed for ice traction.
- Studded — Tire comes from the factory with metal studs installed.
Specialty
- Run-flat — Reinforced sidewall allows driving ~50 miles after a puncture at reduced speed.
- Self-sealing — Inner sealant automatically plugs small punctures.
- Extended mobility (EMT) — General Motors term, similar to run-flat.
- ROF — BMW's run-flat marking ("Reinforced Of-Failure" or similar).
Common tire categories
- Passenger (P) — Standard cars, minivans, crossovers (P-metric).
- Light Truck (LT) — Pickups, SUVs, vans. Higher load capacity.
- Commercial (C) — Heavy trucks, buses.
- Trailer (ST) — Towed trailers. Different speed ratings / construction.
- Industrial — Forklifts, skid steers.
- Specialty — Lawn & garden, ATV, etc.
Common fitment terms
- OE (Original Equipment) — Tire that came on the vehicle from the factory.
- Plus-sizing / Plus-fitment — Aftermarket wheel + tire that fits the same vehicle but is larger than OE.
- OE replacement — Same size as OE, just a different brand/model.
- Staggered fitment — Different sizes on the front vs. rear axle (common on sports cars).
Vehicle terms
- Trim — Sub-model designation (e.g. Camry LE vs. Camry XLE).
- Drivetrain — FWD / RWD / AWD / 4WD.
- Bolt pattern — Number and spacing of wheel lug holes.
- Hub bore — Center hole diameter on the wheel.
